V-Shape Face: What It Is and What Actually Works

A V-shape face is widest at the cheekbones and tapers to a narrow jaw and a pointed chin, like the letter V. It is set mostly by bone, so no mask, roller or exercise can create one. Below, every popular method is rated by what studies actually show, from jaw botox to gua sha. You will also see how to check your own jaw and how to get a V look with hair, beard and makeup.

What is a V-shape face?

A V-shape face, also called a V-line face, has a jaw that narrows steadily from the cheekbones to a slim, defined chin. On a face shape chart, it overlaps with the heart, diamond and inverted triangle shapes. The look is especially popular in Korean beauty culture, where “V-line” became a common term.

Gold line = cheekbone width. Dashed line = width at jaw level. Simplified drawings: the percentages describe these outlines, not cut-offs.

How to check if you have a V-shape face

Compare two widths: your cheekbones and your jaw just below the ears. The smaller the jaw is compared with the cheekbones, the more V-shaped your face. Also look at the line between them. A V tapers in a fairly straight line, while a U curves.

The face shape detector measures both widths from one photo and shows your jaw width compared with your cheekbones. Take the photo straight on, at eye level, with your hair back. A tilted chin or a wide-angle selfie can make the jaw look narrower than it is.

Jaw botox

Some people have wide jaw corners because the masseter, the main chewing muscle, is large. Botox relaxes that muscle so it shrinks.

A 2026 review of five randomised trials with 536 people found it reduced muscle thickness and prominence compared with a placebo. The effect was short-term, and the best dose is still unclear. It does nothing for a wide jaw that is wide because of bone.

V-line surgery

V-line surgery usually means trimming the jaw angles and reshaping the chin bone. A 2023 review describes it as one of the most common facial contouring operations in East Asia.

It is major surgery. Surgeons plan around the nerve inside the jaw that gives feeling to the lip and chin, which is one reason recovery and risks need a proper consultation. Costs vary widely by country and clinic, so get a written quote and check the surgeon’s credentials.

“Natural” methods

Gua sha and rollers: a 2025 trial of 34 women found facial contour measurements dropped by about 2 mm after eight weeks. But it compared gua sha with a roller, with no group that did nothing, so it cannot show the massage caused the change. A 2025 review of facial exercise and massage studies concluded the evidence is not strong enough to say they work.

Facial exercises: in a 2018 study, 16 women who did facial exercises for 20 weeks had fuller upper and lower cheeks. That made them look younger, but fuller cheeks are the opposite of a V shape.

Jawline trainers and hard gum: the masseter is the muscle that jaw botox shrinks. Working it harder is more likely to bulk up the jaw corners than slim them. We found no trial testing either way.

“In one week”: no method changes bone in a week. Fast changes come from less swelling, a different camera angle or a filter. See Instagram face for how filters shape what we expect.

V-shape face for men

A beard is the quickest way to change the jaw line. For a V look, grow length at the chin and keep the sides short and tight.

A goatee, Van Dyke or a short beard trimmed to a point works. If your face is round, this adds the length and taper a round face lacks. Details are in beard styles for your face shape.

If you already have a V-shape face, the goal flips. Your jaw is narrow, so a fuller beard at the jaw corners balances it. For hair, a textured fringe or side part with a low taper keeps the top from looking too wide, as covered in heart face hairstyles for men.

V-shape face for women

Contour is the fastest V look. A soft shadow just under the jawbone, blended toward the ear, makes the jaw recede.

Highlight on the centre of the chin adds point. Hair can help too: long, face-framing layers that fall past the jaw and a centre or soft side part draw the eye down the face. More ideas are in makeup for your face shape.

If you already have a V-shape face, add fullness near the jaw instead. A chin-length bob, waves from the jaw down and side-swept bangs keep it balanced. See heart face hairstyles.

What to keep in mind

A V-shape face is one beauty ideal, not a health goal. Most of the face’s outline comes from bone and genes. No study shows that any face shape is healthier than another. If you are thinking about botox, fillers or surgery, see a qualified doctor, and be wary of quick fixes sold online.

FAQs

What is a V-shape face?

It is a face that is widest at the cheekbones and narrows steadily to a slim jaw and a pointed chin, like the letter V. It overlaps with the heart, diamond and inverted triangle face shapes.

How can I get a V-shape face naturally?

You cannot change bone naturally. Losing excess weight can slim the face. A beard, haircut or contour can create a V look right away. Exercises, masks and rollers have weak or no evidence.

Do V-line masks work?

We found no controlled studies showing that V-line masks or chin straps change face shape. Any effect is likely to be brief, such as a little less puffiness.

Does gua sha give you a V-shape face?

Not proven. One small 2025 trial found about a 2 mm drop in contour measurements, but it had no untreated group. A 2025 review said evidence for facial massage and exercise is not strong enough.

Do facial exercises slim the face?

There is little evidence. In a 2018 study, women who did facial exercises for 20 weeks ended up with fuller cheeks, not slimmer ones.

Does jaw botox make a V-shape face?

It can slim the lower face if your jaw corners are wide because of a large chewing muscle. A 2026 review of five trials found it reduced muscle thickness, but the effect is temporary. It does not change bone.

Can men get a V-shape face?

Yes, the same options apply. The quickest V look for men is a beard with length at the chin and short sides, such as a goatee or Van Dyke.

Is a V-shape face more attractive?

It is a popular ideal, especially in Korean beauty culture, but no study shows one face shape is most attractive for everyone. See the most attractive face shape for what research does measure.
